Articulating boom lift rental - knuckle boom lifts from 10 to over 48 metres
When obstacles need to be bridged, awkward areas reached or working heights beyond 20 metres are required, the articulating boom lift is the machine of choice. Luibl Rental & Sales rents articulating boom lifts with working heights from 10 to over 48 metres - available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive, delivered by our own low-loader throughout Slovakia. On site you will also hear the same machine called an articulated telescopic platform, knuckle boom lift or articulated lift - all refer to the aerial work platform with a knuckle boom covered here. How the articulating lift differs from scissor, telescopic and mast lifts is explained in the overview Lifting platform rental; all types in the rental fleet can be found under Aerial work platform rental.
What is an articulating boom lift?
An articulating boom lift combines two principles: the jointed knuckle boom with a telescopic boom for additional reach. The result is the so-called up-and-over effect: the basket is first raised vertically, then swung over an obstacle and then extended telescopically - positioned precisely at the target point. This makes the articulating boom lift the first choice for pipework, building projections, industrial racking or structures that telescopic or scissor lifts cannot get past. This knuckle boom is also the reason for the name knuckle boom lift - articulating boom lift rental is one of the most requested areas of access equipment at Luibl.
Articulating boom lift vs. telescopic boom lift: what is the difference?
Telescopic boom lifts work with a straight boom and are ideal for long, straight reaches on open ground. Articulating boom lifts are the right choice as soon as obstacles are in the way or the work area has to be approached with a lateral offset. They can reach the same work point from different angles - a clear advantage for facade work or in cramped industrial halls. For purely vertical work on level ground, scissor lifts are often the more cost-efficient alternative.
Which articulating boom lift fits? Four questions to guide your choice
Within this type, four factors determine the right machine:
-
How high and how far to the side? With this type, outreach often matters more than working height alone - it determines how far from the set-up position you can work without moving the machine. With more weight in the basket, the permissible outreach decreases.
-
Indoors or outdoors? For halls, production areas and noise-sensitive environments, the electric articulating boom lift is the choice - zero local emissions and low noise. Outdoors and on unpaved ground, the diesel version with all-wheel drive takes over.
-
Do conditions change during the project? Then the hybrid articulating boom lift combines both: diesel for travelling on rough ground, electric for emission-free work in the hall.
-
Do you need the knuckle boom at all? If the work point can be reached freely from below, a scissor lift is usually the more cost-efficient solution. If only straight reach at great height counts, the telescopic boom lift is the faster machine.
Machines in this class weigh up to 21 tonnes. Clarify the access route, unloading space and permissible point load at the set-up location in advance - this prevents the most common cause of delays on site.

Articulating boom lifts compared: height, outreach and basket capacity
Working height alone says little about an articulating boom lift. What matters is the combination of working height, outreach and permissible basket capacity. The table shows a selection from our rental fleet - from the compact hall machine to the largest articulating boom lift in stock.
| Model | Drive | Working height | Outreach | Basket capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genie Z30/20 N RJ | Electric | 10.89 m | 6.25 m | 227 kg |
| Manitou 120 AETJ-C 3D | Electric | 11.95 m | 7.00 m | 200 kg |
| Manitou Man Go 12 | Diesel | 11.91 m | 6.69 m | 230 kg |
| Genie Z45FE | Hybrid | 15.92 m | 6.94 m | 300 kg |
| Manitou 160 ATJ | Diesel | 16.02 m | 8.30 m | 230 kg |
| Manitou 170 AETJ-L | Electric | 16.90 m | 9.43 m | 230 kg |
| Genie Z60/37FE | Hybrid | 20.16 m | 11.15 m | 227 kg |
| Manitou 200 ATJ e | Electric | 20.00 m | 11.57 m | 230 kg |
| Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid | Hybrid | 20.80 m | 13.00 m | 250 kg |
| Genie Z62/40J RT | Diesel | 20.87 m | 12.47 m | 227 kg |
| Genie Z80/60 | Diesel | 25.77 m | 18.29 m | 227 kg |
| Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid | Hybrid | 28.00 m | 19.00 m | 280 kg |
| Magni DAB28RT | Diesel | 28.10 m | 19.40 m | 250 kg |
| JLG 1500AJP | Diesel | 48.15 m | 23.55 m | 450 kg |
How to read the values:
- Working height is the platform height plus 2 metres - the height at which a person standing in the basket works.
- Outreach is the maximum reach according to the manufacturer. It is usually not achieved at full height; what counts for your work point is the reach diagram of the respective model.
- Basket capacity includes everything in the basket: people, tools and material combined.
Within the same height class, the machines differ considerably. At around 20 metres working height, outreach ranges from 11.15 m (Genie Z60/37FE) to 13.00 m (Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid). If you need to take more than 250 kg up, you will end up with the Genie Z45FE (300 kg), the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (280 kg) or the JLG 1500AJP (450 kg).
Applications: where the articulating boom lift plays to its strengths
The articulating boom lift has the advantage whenever the machine cannot stand directly below the work point. Typical scenarios:
Facade and building envelope
Canopies, balconies, bay windows or planting in front of the building prevent a lift from approaching the facade vertically. The knuckle boom reaches over these obstacles and brings the basket close to the wall - for facade installation, window connections, sealing, cleaning or renovation. Where scaffolding is not worthwhile for short sections of work, the articulating boom lift is often the faster and more economical solution.
Plant engineering and industry
Pipe bridges, cable trays, ventilation ducts and machinery stand close together in production halls. What counts here is that the basket can be guided over and between plant components. Electric and hybrid models work with zero local emissions, non-marking tyres protect the hall floor - important for maintenance, conversion and installation during ongoing operations.
Steel construction, hall and stadium construction
When installing roof girders, grandstand structures or lighting and sound systems, great working heights meet lateral offset. On unpaved sites, diesel models with all-wheel drive take over; on finished hall floors, the electric or hybrid version.
Maintenance and facility management
Inspection, cleaning and repairs on roofs, gutters, lighting and building services often take place in courtyards or at narrow access points. This is where compact electric machines from 10.89 m working height show their strength.
Events and trade fairs
For setting up and dismantling rigging, lighting and stage technology in halls, quiet, emission-free electric models are the usual choice.
Application example: maintenance on a pipe bridge during ongoing operations
A typical scenario from industry shows how the selection works in practice. It is an example of job planning, not an individual customer case.
The starting point: Brackets and insulation are to be replaced on a pipe bridge at a height of 14 metres. The pipe bridge runs over a driving aisle, with plant components on the left and right. The machine can only be set up about seven metres to the side. Two people work with hand tools, and the hall remains in operation.
The selection in four steps:
- Height: 14 m work point plus reserve - so the class from around 16 m working height comes into question.
- Outreach: A good seven metres of offset at 14 m height rules out the compact hall machines. Whether a model can cover the distance at this height is only shown by the reach diagram - the maximum outreach usually does not apply at full height.
- Basket capacity: Two people with tools need a basket capacity well above 200 kg.
- Environment: Hall in ongoing operation - so electric or hybrid with non-marking tyres.
The result: An electric articulating boom lift in the 17 m class such as the Manitou 170 AETJ-L (16.90 m working height, 9.43 m outreach, 230 kg basket capacity) comes into question; with more reserve in height and offset, the Manitou 200 ATJ e (20.00 m, 11.57 m). If heavy components also have to go into the basket, the choice shifts to a model with a higher basket capacity. The Genie Z45FE carries 300 kg, but with 6.94 m it does not reach far enough to the side - then the set-up location must move closer to the pipe bridge or a larger machine is needed.
Clarified before delivery: access and clearance height, bearing capacity of the hall floor at the set-up location and cordoning off the work area. With this information you receive a quote that fits the task - not just the working height.
Delivery by our own low-loader - throughout Slovakia
Luibl Rental has its own low-loader transport fleet. This means: no dependence on third-party hauliers, direct coordination of delivery date and set-up location, delivery to your site on the agreed date. Transporting articulating boom lifts weighing up to 21 tonnes requires specialised equipment - at Luibl this is standard. Whether short-term or long-term rental - delivery throughout Slovakia.
Operation and qualification
Operating aerial work platforms requires a written confirmation of verified expertise issued by a certified inspection technician (Section 17(3) Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.). The operator must receive theoretical and practical instruction in handling the specific machine. All Luibl machines leave the depot after inspection and testing of technical equipment and come with complete technical documentation. We provide an operator briefing on handover.
How much does it cost to rent an articulating boom lift?
Articulating boom lifts are technically more complex than purely vertical lifts - so the rental price covers a wider range. These factors determine it:
- Working height and outreach: From the 12 m electric machine for the hall to the 48 m diesel articulating boom lift outdoors, there are several classes. Outreach often matters more than height alone.
- Drive: Electric for emission-free indoor work, diesel with all-wheel drive for rough terrain, hybrid for jobs that require both.
- Rental period: Daily, weekly and monthly rates are tiered; for longer projects, long-term rental with its own terms pays off.
- Transport: Machines in this class weigh up to 21 tonnes and need specialised transport equipment. Delivery is by low-loader to your site and is shown separately from the machine rental.
- Additional services: Machinery breakdown insurance and on-site briefing are calculated separately.
Included are an inspected machine with valid inspection and testing, maintenance during the rental period and technical advice on selection. With details of working height, required outreach, ground conditions, rental period and job location, you receive an itemised quote.
