Telehandler attachments – the quick-coupler system as an investment multiplier

A telehandler without attachments is a lifting machine. With the right range of attachments it becomes a crane, an aerial work platform, an excavator, a bucket loader and a cleaning machine – on the same chassis, on the same working day. The hydraulic quick coupler is not an accessory but system architecture: it defines how many specialised machines a single telehandler can replace in the fleet.

The quick-coupler system: how it works and what it means legally

Technical principle

The hydraulic quick coupler sits on the boom head. Two hydraulic cylinders tension a locking profile that engages in the standardised mount of every compatible attachment. Attachment changes without leaving the cab, without tools, in under 60 seconds. Hydraulic connections couple automatically when locking; electrical connectors for scales or controls do as well.

CE conformity of the combination: the overlooked legal point

This is the most common compliance error in telehandler operation: it is not only the carrier machine and not only the attachment that must be CE compliant – but the combination of both. The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC treats carrier and attachment as a complete machine as soon as they work together.

Consequences for the buyer:

  • Third-party attachments without manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine can void the CE conformity of the whole system

  • Inspections and tests of technical equipment (Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.) include all attachments in use; unlisted attachments lead to objections

  • In the event of damage, the operator is liable if non-approved combinations were used

Luibl supplies only attachments with manufacturer approval for the respective carrier machines and with complete CE documentation for the combination.

The attachment range in detail

Pallet forks – basic equipment

Standard version with fixed fork width for Euro pallets (800 x 1,200 mm). Decisive when choosing: the residual capacity after the attachment's own weight. A 4 t fork carriage itself weighs 180 – 320 kg; this weight is deducted from the carrier machine's load chart.

Variants:

Fork positioner (hydraulic): fork width infinitely adjustable from the cab; essential for changing pallet formats and industrial applications

Wide forks: for oversized loads such as formwork elements, steel beams, pipe bundles

Side shift: horizontal movement of the load without moving the machine; precise positioning in warehouses and during assembly work

Load hook and winch – the crane function

A load hook with a freely suspended load turns the telehandler into lifting equipment subject to occupational safety rules. A winch additionally allows controlled lowering and lifting from pits or shafts.

Technical requirements for operation:

Load attachment with lifting gear (chains, round slings) in line with applicable Slovak safety rules

A freely suspended load must not be travelled with – the machine must be stationary

Winch attachments require their own inspection in line with applicable Slovak safety rules and STN EN standards, in addition to the telehandler inspection

Work basket – MEWP function with 360 degree slewing

The work basket with CE approval to EN 280 turns the telehandler into an aerial work platform. Load capacity typically 200 – 350 kg (1–2 persons + tools). On a roto telehandler the basket rotates with the superstructure – full 360 degree positioning without repositioning the machine.

Critical legal point: when operating with a personnel basket, the requirements of EN 280 apply in full – including inspections and tests of technical equipment (Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.), the required operator competence and operating instructions for carrying persons. The operator must explicitly reflect this in the risk assessment under Government Regulation No. 392/2006 Coll. (work equipment).

Bucket – earthmoving and material handling

Tipping bucket (standard): for sand, gravel, soil, rubble; volume 0.3 – 1.2 m3 depending on model

High-tip bucket: empties over obstacles and into high containers; tipping height up to 3.5 m above ground

Grab bucket: for lumpy material such as stones, tree stumps, demolition debris; hydraulically closing

Bucket with integrated weighing: for recycling, landfills and bulk material intake with billing accuracy

Concrete skip and mortar container

For concreting on hard-to-reach floor slabs and in shaft structures. Capacity 0.3 – 1.5 m3. Emptied via a slide gate, controlled from the cab or by pull cord. An alternative to a stationary crane for small quantities and frequent changes of position.

Clamp forks and pipe grab

For cylindrical loads: concrete pipes, steel pipes, logs, coils. Clamping jaws close hydraulically; the load is held in the clamp without lifting gear. Advantage over a load hook: no slinger required, faster handling, more precise positioning.

Sweeper and snow clearing

Sweeper attachments with a hydraulically driven brush set for site access roads, yards and open areas. Working width 1.5 – 2.5 m. Snow plough blade as the counterpart for winter operation.

Residual value: why the attachment set affects the resale price

Telehandlers with a complete, manufacturer-compliant attachment set achieve 15 – 25 % higher prices on the used market than single machines without accessories. The reason: the buyer takes over a ready-to-use system with documented CE conformity – and does not have to source attachments or check compatibility.

For your planning this means: renting instead of buying protects liquidity. On resale, attachments increase the residual value of the overall package disproportionately.

Normative requirements

  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC – CE conformity for the carrier-attachment combination; manufacturer approval required

  • EN 1459-1:2017 – the load chart must show the attachment weight as a deduction

  • Inspections and tests of technical equipment (Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.) – cover all attachments in use

  • Occupational safety rules (Act No. 124/2006 Coll.) – additional inspection for load hook and winch operation

  • EN 280:2013+A1:2015 – applies in full for personnel basket operation

Scope of delivery and advice

Luibl supplies attachments only with:

  • manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine (in writing)

  • CE declaration of conformity for the combination

  • operating manual in German

  • an entry in the carrier machine's documentation

Advice on the optimum attachment configuration based on the application profile, the carrier machine's hydraulic data and budget. Packages of carrier machine + attachments can be offered as overall financing on request.

FAQ: Attachments for telehandlers

chevronDown

Which attachments are available for telehandlers?

Common ones are pallet forks, bucket, load hook, lattice jib, work basket and cable winch. Which attachments fit a particular machine depends on the quick-coupling system and the controls - not every attachment can be used on every model.

How does an attachment change the load capacity?

Considerably. Every attachment adds its own weight and shifts the load centre forward. Both reduce the residual load capacity, and disproportionately so as outreach increases. Every combination of machine and attachment therefore has its own load chart.

May I lift people with a basket on a telehandler?

Only with approved equipment for lifting people and under the conditions of Government Regulation No. 392/2006 Coll. (work equipment). For regular work at height, an aerial work platform is the safer and more productive machine – the basket on a telehandler is intended for occasional assembly work.

Are attachments charged separately?

Yes. They are calculated separately from the basic rental. This is one of the most common reasons why two quotes do not seem comparable at first glance - when comparing, check whether the same attachments are included.

Can I change attachments during the rental period?

As a rule, yes. Mention your requirements in your enquiry, and we will deliver the right attachments with the machine or organise the change. A separate transport later on costs more than a joint delivery.

Do I need separate instruction for each attachment?

Operator instruction must cover the attachments actually used. On handover, we brief your employees on the machine and the attachments supplied and hand over the corresponding load charts.

Which attachment do I need for bulk material?

The bucket. If material handling is required on a permanent basis, however, a wheel loader is the more efficient machine - the telehandler plays to its strengths where work also has to be done at height or over obstacles.

Are the attachments inspected?

Yes. Load handling devices are subject to their own inspection requirements and are inspected and documented together with the machine. You receive the certificates with the equipment.
