Diesel articulating boom lift rental – maximum reach for rough terrain
Anyone who has to reach over a pipe bridge on site, get to a facade behind trees or assemble a steel structure at 40 m height will not get far with a straight telescopic boom lift. This is where diesel articulating boom lifts come in: all-wheel drive, articulated boom, oscillating axle and working heights up to 49 m – as a rental machine delivered throughout Slovakia from the Luibl rental fleet.
Why diesel articulating boom lifts are indispensable outdoors
On paved hall floors electric platforms are sufficient. As soon as gravel, clay, snow or slopes come into play, things change. Diesel articulating boom lifts are designed precisely for this field of application – for three reasons:
-
Independence from the power grid: on shell construction sites, in steel halls without a connection or during tunnel and route work, an external power supply is rarely available. The diesel engine runs autonomously; one refuelling lasts several shifts.
-
Torque for gradients and ground conditions: models such as the Genie Z45/25 XC or the Z51/30J RT handle gradients of up to 45 %. On gravel or soft ground, the advantage of a combustion engine over battery solutions becomes clear.
-
Load capacity and reach in one machine: heavy-duty variants such as the Manitou 160 ATJ Plus lift 408 kg into the basket – enough for two fitters plus tools and material. The outreach of this model is 8.52 m.
Compared with a straight telescopic boom lift, the decisive advantage comes into play when there is an obstacle between the machine and the work point – a roof overhang, a utility line, an extension. This is exactly where the articulated boom becomes the tool of choice.
Up-and-over height and articulation point – the technical difference
The terms working height and up-and-over height are often mixed up in rental quotes. For the selection, however, the distinction is worth real money.
Working height is the theoretical reach of a person standing in the basket – i.e. platform height plus 2 m. For the Genie ZX-135/70 this is 43 m with a platform height of around 41 m. This figure appears in the data sheet and the rental quote.
Up-and-over height describes something else: how high can the basket be raised while simultaneously reaching sideways over an obstacle? This is where the articulation point (riser) comes in. Unlike a straight telescopic boom lift, an articulating boom lift has one or more additional pivot points on the boom. This allows the basket to be guided over edges, railings or roof projections without repositioning the machine.
The outreach depends directly on the model. Examples from the Luibl rental fleet:
-
Genie Z45/25J RT (16 m working height): bridges a lateral distance of around 8 m
-
Manitou 160 ATJ Plus (16.21 m): outreach 8.52 m with 408 kg basket load
-
Magni DAB28RT (28 m): basket rotation up to 180 degrees, continuous 360 degree superstructure rotation
-
Genie ZX-135/70 (43 m): four steering modes including crab steering and coordinated all-wheel steering
For models with a large working height, negative reach is also relevant – working below the machine's standing level, for example when inspecting the underside of bridges or working on slopes. The Luibl diesel range offers negative working heights down to -6 m.
Applications in industry and construction
Diesel articulating boom lifts are not all-purpose machines. They play to their strengths in clearly defined scenarios:
-
Steel construction and hall assembly: setting beams, tightening connectors, checking welds – the basket load of 230 to 450 kg allows tools and material right at the work point.
-
Facade work on complex geometries: projections, balconies and roof overhangs are reached under or around with the articulated geometry without repositioning the machine.
-
Maintenance of utility lines and power poles: this is where negative reach is used when working from an embankment or the crest of a dam.
-
Bridge inspection and tunnel construction: long reach up to 49 m and continuous superstructure rotation allow precise positioning even in confined conditions.
-
Industrial assembly in factory halls without a power connection: during construction, before the hall infrastructure is commissioned, diesel is often the only option.
Off-road capability thanks to all-wheel drive and oscillating axle
What really sets a diesel articulating boom lift apart from an indoor machine is the chassis. Three components are decisive here:
-
Permanent all-wheel drive: engine power is distributed to all four wheels. This significantly improves traction on gravel, clay, wet ground or snow compared with rear-wheel drive.
-
Active oscillating axle system: on uneven terrain the oscillating axle compensates for bumps so that all four wheels stay in contact with the ground. Without this system the machine rocks on undulations and stability decreases.
-
Off-road tyres: coarse-lug tyres with an off-road tread are standard. Some models (such as the Magni DAB28RT) are fitted with non-marking tyres that roll without leaving marks even on sensitive surfaces – useful for mixed indoor/outdoor use.
Gradeability is between 30 % and 45 % depending on the model. Important: these values apply to travel with the boom retracted. Anyone working on a slope must level the machine first – stability is checked via the load chart and tilt sensor.
Selection criteria for the right diesel aerial work platform
The right machine follows from four parameters that should be clarified before every enquiry:
-
Required working height including a safety margin: better 2 m in reserve than working at the limit. A 16 m platform for a 14 m job is a better choice than a 43 m machine, which is much more limited in manoeuvrability.
-
Basket load by number of persons plus material: two fitters, a cordless screwdriver, fixings, safety equipment – realistically that quickly adds up to 250 to 350 kg. Models with a 230 kg basket load (Manitou 200 ATJ) are then no longer sufficient.
-
Outreach where obstacles are actually present: Here the data sheet or advice based on the site geometry is essential. Load charts show which basket load is permitted at which boom position.
-
Transport dimensions and site access: A ZX-135/70 with a gross weight of over 20 t needs different low-loaders and access routes than a 16 m Genie. The delivery dimensions must match the site access.
On sensitive ground it is worth checking the ground pressure per wheel. Where the ground is critical, spider lifts are a sensible alternative - these are also available in the Luibl range.
Regulations, briefing and operator authorisation
Anyone operating an aerial work platform needs a written confirmation of verified expertise issued by a certified inspection technician (Section 17(3) Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.). The preparation comprises theoretical instruction, practical training and a final verification of expertise. The employer's authorisation should be given in writing.
The international operator credential is the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) PAL Card, which many general contractors require in practice - it does not, however, replace the written confirmation of verified expertise issued by a certified inspection technician (Section 17(3) Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.).
Other relevant regulations:
-
Occupational safety rules (Act No. 124/2006 Coll.): operation of aerial work platforms
-
STN EN 280: safety requirements, design calculations and tests for mobile elevating work platforms
-
Government Regulation No. 392/2006 Coll.: legal framework for the provision and use of work equipment
-
Austria (AUVA / AM-VO): comparable requirements, governed by the Austrian work equipment regulation
Carry out a visual and functional check every working day before use. Inspections and tests of technical equipment (Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.) performed by an authorised person are documented on delivery for Luibl rental machines.
Logistics, service and delivery areas
Luibl operates its own low-loader fleet. With diesel articulating boom lifts this is no small matter: machines from 16 m working height typically weigh 7.5 t or more, and the ZX-135/70 exceeds 20 t. External hauliers often deliver within vague time windows - our own fleet allows predictable delivery dates, including across borders.
Delivery areas: Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Italy, Hungary, Luxembourg and other European countries.
Service during the rental period: In the event of technical faults or for operator briefing, service technicians can be provided on site on request. This is particularly relevant for large machines, where downtime jeopardises the daily schedule of the entire site.
Long-term rental: For projects lasting several months, long-term terms including inspections and regular maintenance are available. This makes sense on large sites where the same machine is tied up for the entire construction phase.
