Diesel or electric aerial work platform: which suits your project?
Short answer: electric indoors, diesel on rough terrain
Electric indoors and on sensitive floors, diesel on rough terrain and for continuous outdoor operation. The interesting cases are those in between: halls with an outdoor section, city centres with emission restrictions, multi-day jobs without charging facilities.
This compact comparison classifies the drive types and introduces Bi-Energy as the third option.
Electric aerial work platform: quiet, no local emissions, suitable for indoors
Battery-powered platforms operate quietly and with no local emissions - essential in enclosed spaces, in existing buildings with public traffic and increasingly also on emission-regulated sites. Non-marking tyres protect industrial floors.
Modern batteries last a full working day with typical use; charging takes place during breaks or overnight. Limitations: gradeability and traction on unpaved ground, and dependence on a charging facility at the site.
Diesel aerial work platform: rough terrain and continuous operation
Diesel platforms come with four-wheel drive, an oscillating axle and coarse tyres - they drive on gravel, graded subgrade and grass where electric machines cannot. The tank is full in minutes, and multi-shift operation is no problem.
Limitations: exhaust gases and noise rule out indoor use, and in low-emission zones or under municipal restrictions the diesel drive can become an exclusion criterion.
The third option: Bi-Energy and hybrid
Bi-Energy platforms combine a combustion engine and an electric drive in one machine: drive up and work outside in combustion mode, then continue working inside electrically with no local emissions.
The concept is particularly common with spider lifts - in the Luibl rental fleet, almost all spider lifts have a Bi-Energy drive, with working heights of up to 40 metres. For projects with a genuine indoor-outdoor mix, this is often the most economical single-machine solution. There are also hybrid scissor lifts, with working heights of 11.75 to 27.20 metres.

Decision guide by project type
- Interior fit-out, hall, existing building: electric - no alternative.
- Shell construction, facade, outdoor terrain: diesel, matched to the ground conditions.
- Indoor-outdoor mix or sensitive environment with off-road access: consider Bi-Energy, usually as a spider lift.
- Emission requirements in public tenders: offer electric or Bi-Energy - increasingly an award criterion.
Which platform type to choose regardless of drive is explained in the guides Scissor lift and Articulating boom lift or scissor lift.
Costs: the drive hardly affects the price
When renting, electric and diesel models of the same class differ only slightly in price - working height drives the price, not the drive type. Bi-Energy special machines such as spider lifts cost more because they form a machine class of their own.

Runtime and charging in practice
The figure "one working day" is correct for typical use - but it depends on three factors:
Share of travel. Lifting and lowering use little energy, driving uses a lot. A platform that works in one position all day lasts much longer than one that is constantly driving around the hall.
Temperature. In cold conditions, usable capacity drops noticeably. Losses should be expected in winter operation on unheated sites.
Battery technology. Lead-acid batteries need a long, uninterrupted charging time and do not cope well with interim charging. Lithium-ion batteries charge faster, tolerate interim charging and deliver more consistent performance throughout discharge.
Before renting, it is therefore worth asking a question that is often forgotten: Is there a charging connection at the site - and what kind? Small models charge at 230 V, larger ones need three-phase power. Without a connection, the electric platform becomes a piece of furniture after one day.
Emission requirements, noise and tenders
The drive type is increasingly no longer just a matter of convenience but an admission criterion.
Indoor spaces. Combustion engines are practically ruled out in enclosed spaces - exhaust gases accumulate, and ventilation concepts are complex and rarely economical.
Municipal restrictions. Low-emission zones, residents' protection and noise ordinances apply particularly in city centres and for work outside normal hours. In sensitive locations, an electric machine can make the difference between working and waiting.
Public tenders. Low-emission sites are increasingly appearing as an award criterion in tenders. Anyone who can offer electric or Bi-Energy machines scores points as early as the bidding phase.
Noise during night and weekend work. Building cleaning, retail spaces and traffic facilities are often maintained outside operating hours. A quiet machine avoids discussions with residents and authorities.
Maintenance, availability and residual value
Maintenance effort. Electric platforms have significantly fewer wear parts: no oil changes, no filter servicing, no exhaust aftertreatment system. For renters, this matters indirectly - fewer service outages mean better availability.
Battery care. The battery, however, is the critical component. Deep discharge and idle periods without charging cause lasting damage. For rental machines, the rule is therefore: connect to the charger at the end of the working day, even if residual capacity is still displayed.
Availability in season. Compact electric scissor lifts are the most in-demand class of all; in the peak season from spring to autumn, early booking pays off. Diesel and Bi-Energy special machines are less common on the market but less subject to seasonal demand.
And the price? When renting, comparable electric and diesel classes hardly differ. The choice of drive is therefore almost exclusively a question of the site - not the budget. Current price ranges: Aerial work platform rental: costs.
Four typical wrong decisions when choosing the drive
"Electric is fundamentally unsuitable for outdoor use." Wrong - on paved, level surfaces many electric models are approved for outdoor use. Only gravel, topsoil and gradients call for diesel or tracks.
"Diesel works indoors with sufficient ventilation." In practice it is almost never economical. The required air exchange rate can hardly be achieved in enclosed halls, and the risk assessment becomes a project in itself. If you work indoors, plan electric.
"The machine arrives with a full battery, that is enough." It is enough for one working day - after that you need a charging connection on site. Without a confirmed charging option, the platform stands idle on day two.
"Bi-Energy is always the safe choice." It is the right choice for genuine indoor-outdoor projects. For pure hall work, the electric platform is cheaper and more manoeuvrable; for pure outdoor operation, the diesel machine is more robust and superior in continuous operation. Bi-Energy machines are a class of their own with their own price level - they pay off when they replace a machine change, not as a standard solution.
When in doubt, it is not the drive that decides first, but the ground at the site - and almost everything else follows from that.
Frequently asked questions
Can an electric aerial work platform be used outdoors?
On paved, level ground, yes - many models are approved for this. For gravel, graded subgrade and grass, a diesel platform or a spider lift is the right choice.
How long does the battery of an electric aerial work platform last?
With typical use, one working day. Depending on the model, charging is from a standard socket or three-phase power.
What is a Bi-Energy aerial work platform?
A machine with a combustion engine and an electric drive: combustion mode outdoors, electric with no local emissions indoors - common above all with spider lifts for indoor-outdoor projects.
Is an electric platform more expensive to rent?
Generally not significantly. The rental price depends primarily on working height and platform type, not on the drive.
